These are her own words as told to a biographer who spent time with her in
her last days:
I had such a good life. Lawrence and I were best friends and remained that
way. We did everything together, work and play. There was always work to
do, still we would go dancing for fun. I am so proud of our children and who
they have become.
We had quite a large family with my brothers and sisters and half brothers
and sisters. I thought of them all as brothers and sisters. We loved them all.
We both enjoyed and loved our family. There has always been a lot of love in
my life.
Before he passed, Lawrence asked Jerred and Jane Ashcraft to take care of
me after he was gone. That is how I ended up at the Sunflower Adult Foster
Home. They take really good care of me. I am very touched that Lawrence
continued taking care of me right to the very end.
I lived a really fine life with a really good husband, children, family and
friends. There is a lot to be grateful for.
Ruby Irene passed away in the early morning of April 10th. She was proud
of the fact that her grandmother delivered her and that she was given her name as her middle name.
She was the first child of Frances (Young) and Glen Smith born during the
depression.
She was followed by Darrell (Sonny), Judy and Douglas. Later Frances married
Grover Smith with five more siblings to follow, Lyle, Richard, Janet, and
Phyllis and Bill.
Glen later married Ruby( a previous acquaintance), who added four
daughters from a previous marriage. Of this marriage two more daughters
were born, Glenda and Carrie.
Lawrence and Ruby eloped on July 11, 1953. They are survived by daughter Laina (Steve)
Yancey and Dirk (Carol) Garside. They have three grandchildren, Jon (Leslie) Ryan, Rita (Josh)
Brown and Garrett (Jamie) Garside and great-grandchildren, Taylor, Cade, Avery, Allison,
Berlyn, Tucker, Zane and Zoe.
Everyone who knew Ruby loved her. She had a kind heart and was always
the one people would open up to and pour their heart out and tell their
troubles. She was a good listener.
She loved to be with her family and friends. She liked to go out to dinner
and loved to dance. Many people didn't know she was very musical. In
younger years she liked to pick up a banjo or guitar and pick along with her
aunts and uncles. She especially loved playing music with her Aunt Pat
Young.
She enjoyed arrow head hunting and sometimes she and Pat or family would
spend the day out looking for them.
She took great pride in her yard and flowers. But her favorite thing was
probably shopping.......for clothes. Her mother-in-law used to ask her “What
do you need all those clothes for? You only have one body”
Ruby lived in Prineville her whole life as a homemaker, wife and mother.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Lawrence, her
brothers and sister, Darell (Sonny), Judy, and Douglas and sister-in law
Lynda.
There will be a funeral service on Friday May 16, 2025 at 1:00pm at Prineville Funeral Home. 199 NE 10th ST Prineville, OR 97754
