Michael (Mike) McCabe Obituary

Michael (Mike) Francis McCabe, 74 of Prineville, OR, died, March 28, 2026, in a room
filled with love, laughter, and several of his favorite people.
According to Mike, he was born in Redmond, OR on August 16, 1951. He attended
Crook County Schools graduating from Crook County High School in 1969. After high
school Mike attended Oregon State University graduating with a degree in agri business
in 1974. While in college he met his future wife Jacqueline (Jacquie) Warner from Baker
City, Oregon. Mike and Jacquie wed on August 3, 1974.
Mike’s first career was as an agricultural loan officer with Farm Credit Services. While
working for Farm Credit Services, he worked in Caldwell, ID, Soda Springs, ID, Odessa,
WA, Spokane, WA and finally Redmond, OR. In 1987, Mike moved back to Crook
County to work on the family farm and raise registered Hereford cattle. Mike spent his
days as a banker and his nights and weekends as a farmer. He retired from agricultural
lending in 1994. Mike also worked as a Realtor in Crook County for several years before
committing to county government full time.
In 1992 Mike became a Crook County Commissioner. He went on to serve 16 years as
a County Commissioner and eight years as County Judge. Mike loved working for the
County and he considered it an honor to serve the constituents of Prineville and Crook
County. During his tenure on the county commission he was instrumental in the
formation of the Crook County Commission on Children and Families and Mosaic
Medical. During his 24 years of service, he was a member of multiple boards at the
state and regional level including serving on the board of directors for the Association of
Oregon Counties and Central Oregon Intergovernmental Council and Workforce
Development. As a member of the county commission Mike worked to bring industry
and technology to Crook County while protecting the livelihood of farmers and ranchers.
Although he worked diligently to create economic development in Crook County,
including working to bring Facebook and Apple Data Centers to Crook County, he was
most proud of his contributions to the expansion of the Bowman Museum, his efforts to
bring the OSU/COCC open campus to Prineville, and the construction of the current
library.
In addition to his service as an elected official, Mike spent countless hours working to
improve the community wherever he lived. Although he knew nothing about baseball, he
coached a little league team while living in Soda Springs, ID. While living in Spokane,
WA, he served on the Board of Directors for the Spokane Livestock Expo.
Mike loved the County Fair. He served on the Fairboard for years and was a member of
the Crook County 4-H/FFA Livestock Auction long after his children had graduated high
school. In his later years he could be found hanging quilts in Carey Foster Hall.

Mike didn’t slow down in retirement. He remained active in the community joining the
Rimrock Trails Board, rejoining the Crook County Fairboard after a hiatus and serving
on the Budget Committee for St. Joseph Catholic Church with his dear friends.
No matter where he traveled, Crook County was always Mike’s home. For 63 years he
lived on McCabe Road north of Prineville. He loved livestock, farming, boots, and
cologne. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, his service to the community,
the love he had for his girls, and his loyalty to his friends.
Mike is survived by his wife of 52 years Jacquie, daughters Melanie McCabe (Andre
Browne) and Shannon McCabe (Roger Merrill). His sisters Margaret White, Mary Jo
(Dave) Hampton, and Cathy (Jim) Lane, brothers Pat (Georgia) McCabe, and Pete
(Robin) McCabe. In laws Barbara Warner, Connie Colton, Fred (Cami) Warner, Scott
(Tracey) Warner, Chris (Barbara) Warner and his many nieces and nephews that he
loved. Mike will also be missed by lifelong friends Chuck and Diane Giovanini and kids.

and nephews David McCabe and Kevin White.
