Don Morgan, of Condon, Oregon, passed away on Thursday, November 17, from complications of cardiovascular disease. He was 64. He is survived by his son Bob Morgan (Jessika), and his siblings Debra McKinney (Terry), Denise Brassé (Rob), and Darrell Morgan (Rhonda), along with two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Don was born in Sweetwater, Tennessee, to parents Bobby Ray and JoAnn Morgan. His father was a truck driver and his mother was a bookkeeper. Bobby changed jobs often, so the family moved to follow them: Kentucky, Ohio, Texas, Florida, and California were waystations between occasional returns to the Tennessee Smoky Mountains where Don’s parents were born. The family lived in Lubbock, Texas when Don graduated Coronado High School in 1977.
He was a big brother to Denise and Darrell, secretly following them on their occasional escapes when they declared they were “running away” – to ensure they came to no harm during their bids for freedom. Big sister Debra tells stories of how smart and mechanical he was, building new things out of old parts, even making a toy from an old alarm clock at the age of eight.
After turns in various vocations such as foodservice, auto mechanics, apartment maintenance, shipping fulfillment, and towing large vehicles for the state of Ohio, he became a long-haul trucker like his father.
Married and divorced twice, Don was fiercely independent but with a generous and kind soul. He spent the last few years of his life living with his sister Debra, being a good uncle to her kids and helping with their computers, vehicles, and living expenses. His great-niece Maddie referred to him as “Mr. Wizard” and “The Tinker” – she also called him “Unka Don,” and called his room “The Lab.”
He will be missed by all who loved him.
No funeral or memorial service is immediately planned. The family will notify loved ones in the future if a service is scheduled.
