Thomas Lee Pickens, a longtime resident of Canby, Oregon, passed away at the age of 70 on July 2, 2018.
He was with his brothers and their wives in Prineville during his illness and died at the Partners in Care Hospice House in Bend Oregon.
Tom was born in Portland, Oregon on April 23, 1948 to Edith and Earle Pickens, both of whom predeceased Tom. He had two brothers, Bill (Kathy) and Chris (Sandy). He was a beloved uncle to Scott Pickens (Kelly), Jenni Fisk (David), Stephanie Middleton (Aaron) and Wendi Dion. He had five grandnieces and three grandnephews.
After graduation from John Marshall High School, he joined the Marines in 1966 and served in Vietnam 1967 ~ 1968, then discharged in 1970. He was a machinist at Stanley Tools in Milwalukie, Oregon until his retirement.
Tom had a small farm in Canby where he enjoyed growing kiwis, grapes, apples, pears, cherries and various seasonal vegetables. He once grew a tomato plant that reached 12 feet tall! The cherry tomatoes from that plant were the best ever. He also had a Pawpaw tree which is a native to eastern United States and Canada. He was a true steward of the earth. So much so that he left his land to the nature conservancy with the hopes that they would keep his land as a wilderness for the animals and birds.
Tom’s memorial service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery on August 1, 2018 at 1 PM followed by a reception at the Monarch Hotel, 12566 S. E. 93rd Ave., Clackamas, OR 97015, From 2 PM to 4 PM
