Lately Mario has been on my brain. so many stories and no one to tell them to.... We were estranged for a few reasons, but there was a part of me that regardless loved him as much as the first time we met. No matter what has happened he will always be one of the first men i would call my best friend…. He was one of those quick witted kids, he was always causing a stir, and creating laughter wherever he went…..
My first major call to his house, as a teenager, was long before the days of cell phones. We just had land lines and message machines. He and i had created characters where he was my daughter marcy and i was his mother (i have long since forgotten her name, we’ll call her bev)…..
I thought i was being funny one day, called and said “marcy, it’s your mother “bev". I’m sorry i’m not able to pick you up today…” and think i went on to name reasons as to why i couldn’t and said to “call me when you get home safe”….. i was promptly called back by marios mom and had to tell her that it was an inside joke and sorry for causing her any anxiety about some strange fictional kid not being picked up by their mother from school…..
He also was a terror to our 8th grade home ec teacher… making jokes and sniffing pixie sticks to cause her anxiety, and man did the rest of us get good laughs at all the guff he gave her…. and some of us happily helped him cause.
I will miss him always. I think of all the wonderful funny times we had during school days and after we escaped our small town schools. my heart aches for the loss of him, and aches for his family. I am also thankful to his mother for bringing such a funny and good soul into the rest of our lives. I would not be the same without him. I love you Mario Jones.... i love you mamma Jones... he will be greatly missed….. xoxoxoxoxo

Mario,

I listened to No Excuses by Alice in Chains today. I remember a few months ago I was having a bad day and you texted me the lyrics to the song. One of our favorite bands back in the day. It made my day. Love you my friend.

"No Excuses"

It's alright
There comes a time
Got no patience to search
For peace of mind
Layin' low
Want to take it slow
No more hiding or
Disguising truths I've sold

Everyday it's something
Hits me all so cold
Find me sittin' by myself
No excuses, then I know

It's okay
Had a bad day
Hands are bruised from
Breaking rocks all day
Drained and blue
I bleed for you
You think it's funny, well
You're drowning in it too

Everyday it's something
Hits me all so cold
Find me sittin' by myself
No excuses, then I know

Yeah, it's fine
We'll walk down the line
Leave our rain, a cold
Trade for warm sunshine
You my friend
I will defend
And if we change, well I
Love you anyway

Everyday it's something
Hits me all so cold
Find me sittin' by myself
No excuses, then I know
