Howard Silver Obituary

Howard Silver, aged 92, died at his home in Redmond, Oregon on December 18, 2018. A graveside service with military honors was held on December 20 at Juniper Haven Cemetery in Prineville.

Howard is survived by his wife of 44 years, AnnaKay Silver, sons Sanford (Wilma) Silver of Eugene, Samuel Silver of The Dalles, David (Mary) Silver of Portland, and daughters Katherine Silver of Bend and Rebecca Silver of Prineville, sister Donna Jackson of Portland, seven nieces and nephews, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He is preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Eva Silver.

Howard was born April 19, 1926, in Portland, Oregon. He grew up in John Day and Portland. He was Bar Mitzvahed at Congregation Neveh Shalom in Portland and graduated from Benson High School in Portland.

A veteran of World War Two, Howard served as a Sergeant in the Army Air Corps. He was stationed in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. At the war’s end, with a sense of adventure, he worked on Guam in the South Pacific for a year.

Howard moved to Central Oregon in 1956. In his early years in the area, he served as a volunteer firefighter for the Redmond Fire Department and was an owner of the Rogers and Lynch clothing store in downtown Redmond. Howard loved to tell stories of his time with the fire department, particularly numerous pranks that involved hiding the Cent-Wise wooden Indian in various places around town.

Howard married AnnaKay on July 4th, 1974, at the residence of Reverend Penhollow in Redmond, Oregon. They often said that the fireworks each Independence Day were for them.

In his retirement, Howard spent several seasons touring reindeer for Operation Santa Claus. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking, and motorcycles.
