Harry Charles Vaughan

June 14, 1930 ~ October 30, 2019

Harry Charles Vaughan, 89 of Prineville passed away early Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2019.  He was born in Mitchell, Oregon on June 14, 1930 to John and Gladys (Traver) Vaughan.

He attended grade school at the one room Gable Creek schoolhouse and finished his freshman and sophomore years at Crook County High School in Prineville before choosing to leave school after his sophomore year at age 15 to go out on his own.

He worked at various ranches in the Central Oregon area until moving to Eugene, Oregon at the age of 18, where he met and married Hattie Marie Smith in the spring of 1948.  While in Eugene he worked in the lumber industry, an occupation that would span the next 50 years of his life.

He moved to Prineville with his wife and infant son, David, in 1951 and went to work for Ochoco Lumber Company.  In 1953 he went to work for Pine Products Corporation where he would spend the next 42 years until his retirement in 1995.  While in Prineville, they had three more children, Loretta, Debbie and Ginni.

Harry’s faith and his family were a huge part of his life.  He and his wife were lifelong members of the First Baptist Church where they served on various boards and committees.

In 1960 Harry received a diploma from DeVry Technical Institute following his completion of an electronics correspondence course and he began a second occupation working evenings and weekends doing television and radio repair for Sears in Prineville.

Having grown up on a ranch, Harry loved the outdoors and was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting, fishing, camping and exploring the Central Oregon outdoors.  His hobbies, when he had spare time, included raising a big garden along with raising sheep, chickens and turkeys.  Harry was mechanically inclined with experience in repairing both diesel and gas engines.  He also found time during summers to work on the Rafter 2 ranch helping to keep haying and farm equipment running.

He is survived by his brother, Bill (Ruth) Vaughan; sister, Virginia Rhoden; son, David (Julie) Vaughan; daughter, Loretta Vaughan; daughter, Debbie (Bill) Lefferts; daughter, Ginni (Rob) Hutchinson; nine grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was proceeded in death by his father, John Vaughan; mother, Gladys Travor Vaughan; four brothers, Wesley, Earl, Houston and Robert; five sisters, Hettie, Ruth, Lily, Dorothy and Hazel.  A service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2019 at 10 a.m. at the Prineville Funeral Home Chapel with internment to follow at Juniper Haven Cemetery.
