Carole Ann Norton was born on August 19, 1940 in Reading, Pennsylvania to Jim and Leona Norton. The family relocated to Hermiston, Oregon, where Carole was the star pupil at Hermiston High School. She went on to study at Mount Angel College in the Willamette Valley, where she was routinely at the top of the Dean’s list. She graduated with honors in 1962 and married fellow student David Leonard at the Catholic church in Welches, Oregon in the shadow of Mt. Hood.
The couple had three children, Mark David, Michael Patrick, and Mary Elizabeth. Mary was born in Heidelberg, Germany in 1974, where David worked for the U. S. federal government for four years. Sadly, Michael preceded Carole in death there, and the family returned to the United States. Carole worked as a homemaker and a library assistant in Alamogordo, New Mexico until 1998, when she and her husband returned to Oregon and settled in Prineville. They enjoyed living in Prineville for nearly 20 years. In 2017, family and friends in the community helped them through the loss of their oldest son, Mark. Carole passed away at St. Charles Hospital in Bend, Oregon on September 9, one day after their 57th wedding anniversary. She is survived by her husband, David, and her daughter Mary.
