William “Bill” Santone

February 6, 1924 ~ January 18, 2017

William “Bill” Santone passed away peacefully and comfortably Jan. 18 following a short stay at St. Charles Hospital.  Bill was born in Elmyra, Pa. on Feb. 6, 1924, to Wilhelmina and Joseph Santone and was one of eight children.  He relocated with his family to San Jose, Calif., where he attended school prior to joining the army.

Bill entered the military at 16 ½ driven by a desire of wanting to serve his country; a characteristic maintained throughout a distinguished military career that ended with him retiring a Sergeant Major.  Bill’s military career included tours in Europe where he received a purple heart and other commendations for his dedication and bravery.  He later served in the both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. The discipline and patriotism he learned in the Army never left him, he was a first generation Italian-American who appreciated our country and was proud to serve defending it.

Bill was equally successful in his professional life working in various financial institutions following the Military.  This included management positions with the GE Credit Union in San Jose, followed by a long career with Bay Federal Credit Union, where he retired as office president.  Bill had a unique ability to identify natural leaders and nurtured everyone to reach their full potential.  His leadership skills and style resulted in cherished relationships and friendships that extended well into this retirement; a testament of his leadership style.

Bill and Janet moved to Prineville to enjoy retirement and pursue their interests in traveling, fishing, gardening and spending time with animals. A lifelong animal lover, Bill went back to school to obtain the qualifications required to be a volunteer humane officer.  He also served in various capacities including Commander of the American Legion, as well as being an active member of the Eagles and Moose Lodge.  In his later life, he welcomed the weekly breakfast with the Band of Brother’s and comradery that offered. Bill rarely spoke about his military experiences; but had the highest respect for any services members.

An avid sports fan, he enjoyed following baseball, football and basketball.  He had a keen eye for the game as a result of refereeing all of these sports earlier in the military.

Bill was preceded in death by his wives’, Martha Kroler and Delicia “Jan” Santone; as well as his sisters, Mildred, Louise and Lena; and brothers, Mike, Joe, Peewee and Bobby Santone.

We would like to express our sincerest appreciation to the St. Charles Hospital staff and residents of Prineville who accompanied him during his last week. We take solace in knowing he was provided the best medical care while enjoying the company of his dear friends.

Bill will be interned with his wife Janet at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 25, at Juniper Haven Cemetery.  A celebration of life will follow at noon at the Eagles Lodge.  Friends and family are invited to share any stories, as well as view an assortment of photos and military medals.
