James Henry Bachman

November 11, 1935 ~ May 6, 2015 (age 79) 79 Years Old

James “Jim” Henry Bachman, age 79, died

Wednesday May 6, 2015, at his home, with his family at his side, after a long battle with complications from heart disease. Jim was born on Nov. 11, 1935 on the family farm

in Auburn, Iowa to Antone and Helena Bachman, where he joined five brothers and two sisters. He attended schools in Auburn and graduated from Auburn High school in 1953 and joined the Army and was stationed in Alaska for two years. After leaving the military in 1956, he went back to Alaska with his buddy Bob for several months. He attended St. John’s seminary in Minnesota for one year. He then moved to Southern California, where his brother

Ray lived, and while attending Pasadena City College, met the love of his life, Jennie Victor, who was working as a nurse in Pasadena. Jim and Jennie were united in marriage on July 29, 1959, in St. Benedict, Saskatchewan, Canada. They made their home in Ames, Iowa where Jim attended Iowa State University, majoring in forestry. While in Ames, they had

three sons; Steven, Robert and James. In July, 1962 they moved to Vale, where Jim had been hired by BLM as a range specialist. He was one of the original employees to implement the “Vale Project.” While in Vale, Jim and Jennie had four more children; Teresa, Brenda, Dennis and John. In 1974, the family moved to Prineville, where Jim had transferred with the BLM. He retired in 1987 from the BLM, but continued working at the Shalom Shop, a religious goods and bookstore that he and Jennie had established in 1980 in Bend, until its closing in 2015. Jim was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church and for many years was involved in the folk group he and Jennie were instrumental in starting at St. Joseph’s Church in Prineville. He was involved in many youth group activities there as well. He was a man of deep faith, which he imparted to his family. He loved to sing and dance and was often entertaining everyone at family gatherings. His love of the outdoors led to many hunting, fishing and camping adventures. His family will miss these things, as well as his humor, calm demeanor and the big smile he always greeted a person with, but will always cherish these great memories.

Jim is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jennie of Prineville; sons, Steve (Patty), Rob (Sally) and Dennis of Baker City, Bim (Julie) of Bend, and John of Hillsboro; daughters Teresa (Dan) of Fossil ,and Brenda (Bob) of Culver; brothers, Ed and Duane of

Iowa; many nieces and nephews whom he cherished; 20 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren, whom he loved very much and enjoyed having around him

even as his life drew to a close. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters,

Marilyn (infancy) and Delores Koster; and brothers Ott, Cletus and Raphael.
