Long time Oregon resident Harold Hargitt, 91, passed away at home January 9th, 2017 with his wife Marjorie at his side.

Harold was born in Vale Oregon March 17th 1925 to Richard and Lillian Hargitt.  The family lived in several different parts of the country before settling in Rogue River Oregon when he was a young boy. During this time in his life he was very active in the scouts.

He served in the US Navy in WWII from 1943-1945, and in the Naval Reserve through 1952.  He received his naval training at Farragat Naval Station in Idaho before being sent to the South Pacific where he spent the majority of his service to our country.  His service in the Navy started prior to graduating from HS and upon his return from the war he went to work.  The graduating class of 2006 Rogue River High School invited Harold to walk in their graduation ceremony to receive his diploma 62 years later at the age of 81!  He was beaming when he received that diploma!

He began his long career with the Postal Service in 1945 and settled in the Grants Pass area.  He was married to Geneva Moore in June of 1943 just prior to enlisting in the service and they had 2 daughters.

On January 1st 1975 he married Marjorie Schultz Barnhart who had 4 children.  Harold and Marjorie spent many happy years together and celebrated their 42nd anniversary on Jan 1st of this year.

Harold retired from the Postal Service after 34 years and he and Marjorie were able to fulfill their love of traveling.  For the next 20 years they traveled full time in their RV to every state including Canada & Alaska, with a side trip to Hawaii; prior to retiring, Harold enjoyed hunting and fishing the local areas.

They settled in Central Oregon where the sun always shines, first at Crooked River Ranch, and then to Prineville with beautiful views of the mountains, lovely weather, and friendly neighbors.  Harold was a member of the Prineville Band of Brothers, and over 50 year member of the Grants Pass Elks Lodge.

He is survived by his wife Marjorie, brother Rosco Hargitt, 2 daughters Goldie Murphy and Sandra Finneran, adopted son Ron Galon, stepchildren Deby Barnhart, Cindy Johnson, Becky Bellingham, and Charles Barnhart. Grandchildren Buffy, Angela, Alex, Melissa, Berkeley, Bret, Zoe, Ranann, McKenzie, and Lucas; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces & nephews.

He is preceded in death by his sister Goldie Hargitt, brother Robert Hargitt, grandson Hershel McCants Jr, and grandson Bryan Bellingham.

In leiu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Prineville Band of Brothers.

A ceremony by the Military Honor Guard is being planned the Prineville Band of Brothers will be doing the Military Honors with the United States Navy as well, it will be held Friday January 27,  2017 at 2:00 pm at the Prineville Funeral Home.  Burial service is being planned for June 17th at 1pm at the Woodville Cemetery in Rogue River Oregon.  Memories can be shared and details of the services can be found on Harold's page at Prineville Funeral Home web page.
